Ode To…

This poem isn’t a new concept, neither is it an original thought. Many classics down through the ages have been written with an eye on the same subject. But oh, such a joy to see another when one appears  in our midst.

Every generation needs those who keep us focused on the true treasures of life without the wild imaginings and fluff that tends to blind. Whatever era or epoch we find ourselves, better or worse, God keeps cranking them out. Those “common” people who can see clearly through any veil of the magus which tries to blind while spinning lies; and doing this simply by living their lives openly, humbly, and without affectations.

Ode to the Ordinary Man…..

How [humble] is the ordinary man

who speaks so plainly whenever he can;

no fancy frills or with words to impress

he casually makes a point to address

the common folk who gather around

to listen to one who is solid and sound.

You see, folk are not fools nor open to greed

they recognize hawkers who just wish to feed

them false empty promises that float in the mist

no matter how hard these hawkers insist.

They say commonsense is really quite rare

with it now neither common nor fully aware,

but a common man’s different and is one to be heard

for he brings commonsense and a humble true word

to gatherings of people of the same ilk

who are tired of hearing the false made of silk.

[Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him and said concerning him, See! Here is an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no guile nor deceit nor falsehood nor duplicity!] John 1:47 AMPC

About the artist:

My name is Carol Congalton and I love to write, whether it’s poetry or storiettes, or even just some musings. A lot of my posts will carry a Christian Ethos, as I love JESUS CHRIST and have been one of His followers for over 40 years.

I also enjoy writing various forms of poetry so you will find haiku, cinquain, haibun, tanka and nonets to name just a few. Storiettes are a bit like Flash Fiction so they will make their appearance from time to time as well.

I hope you will enjoy browsing through the posts. Each post will be called to dance its own dance in its own time and amongst them all I hope you find something that resonates with yourself.

  1. As we get older it’s easy to think the past is “The Good Ol’ Days,” and all sanity has left … but I’m so grateful God isn’t limited to what I personally know, and I LOVE that He always raises up a new generation for Him! ☺️

    1. Amen! You are so right, Ame. And I’m elderly enough to know even the “Good Ol’ Days” weren’t all that good. I was only a kid and easier to fool! I thought Camelot was a real place on earth. But God! He is always faithful!

    1. I’m glad you liked it too, David. Yes, I can see Lincoln in that also. But my mind went more to everyday people. God is no piker. He loves showing off His wisdom through His “common” folk.
Thanks much for your comment. Blessings to you!

  2. The foolish things of this world… a man in camels hair and ate wild honey and locusts and another man who was the Hitler of his day. Both absurd yet were mighty in Christ.
