Time Capsule – A Classic

Messages from the past. Beautiful messages time has never forgotten, never left behind. Unlimited messages, timeless and true.

They said it best who said it long ago. Hence, from across the pages of history, their voices linger, still strong, still echoing the truth proclaiming the Desire of Ages – Jesus Christ.

Some have followed with utterances of the same truth. But at the same time, it lacks the panache of illustration as graced the Prince of Preachers. Perhaps that is the reason for the preponderance of kept material in his archives.

To wit:

C.H. Spurgeon – London, England. 1834-1892

Our God

Charles H. Spurgeon

Romans 9:13-16.

Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.” What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” It does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.

God may, if He wills, save the entire human race; or if it pleases Him, He may save none. If He so wills, He may make one man a monument of mercy, and leave his neighbor to reap his due punishment. This is what God has a right to do, and He claims His sovereign prerogative.

‘No doctrine in the whole Word of God has more excited the hatred of mankind than the truth of the absolute sovereignty of God!

Men have no objection to a god who is really no God. I mean, by this:

a god who shall be the subject of their caprice,

a god who shall be a lackey to their will,

a god who shall be under their control–

they have no objection to such a being as that.

But a God who speaks, and it is done.

a God who commands, and it stands fast.

a God who does as He wills among the armies of heaven and among the inhabitants of this lower world–such a God as this they cannot endure!’

Psalm 115:3 “But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases!”

Psalm 135:5-6 “For I know that the Lord is great; our Lord is above all gods.

Whatever the Lord pleases, He does–in heaven and on earth, in the seas and all their depths!”

Charles Haddon Spurgeon Charles H. Spurgeon

Spurgeon is the most widely read preacher in history. There is more Spurgeon material available today, than any other Christian author, living or dead.

“With whom among men can you compare Spurgeon? He combined the preaching power of Jonathan Edwards and Whitefield with the organizing power of Wesley, and the energy, fire, and courage of Luther.” B.H. Carroll

    1. Isaiah is an excellent example, Gary! The Apostle Paul and Daniel, as well. We often grow to a point where the very thought of coming into the presence of the Lord in our current frame will cause us to quake at least a little. We have a fuller understanding of Who God is and who we are before Him. At times I long just to hear Him say, “Do not fear. It is I. Stand up.” With the fulness of Perfect Love that identifies Him.

  1. Spurgeon’s “Mornings and Evenings” is one of my favorite devotionals. I’m afraid if Spurgeon lived in modern times, our modern Christian publishing houses would reject his work because he holds firm to the truth about the Sovereign God. It seems books about “the god who is really no God. I mean, by this: a god who shall be the subject of their caprice” are the ones that feed the markets appetite.

    1. I do agree, Beth. I cut my spiritual teeth on “Morning and Evening” and still have it as one of my staples.
I believe any attack against the Sovereignty of God is born from hell. Unfortunately, these days it looks like many are choosing to fall away. Nevertheless, it’s an indicator giving many clues to where we are approximately in mankind’s time concerning God’s overall plan.

  2. Joshua 1:8. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.
