The Race is Not to the Swift

Finish Line

We struggle in battle every day to make it to that day of days, the Finish Line.

Although we do not lack belief, nor doubt faith, for we know in Whom we have believed.

Still, each new day is an encapsulated lifetime, so each new day is a venture to hold onto what we have. By adding another spoonful of grace daily, we move onward, one day at a time. Stretching toward that day of days when we can say:

“Into your hand, I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.” —Psalm 31:5

~G.W.

Brethren, I count not myself yet to have apprehended: but one thing I do, forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal unto the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Php 3:13-14

****

“I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but [God knows] them all. Ecclesiastes 9:11

Apostle Paul Addressing the Areopagus – Acts 17:19

  1. Ps. 31:5 is one of my all-time favorite verses. And this! “each new day is an encapsulated lifetime, so each new day is a battle to hold onto what we have. By adding another spoonful of grace daily, we move onward, one day at a time.” I’ve never thought of it that way, G. W. I love, love, love that!

    1. I’m glad it clicked with you, Kendra. Thank you! Yes, “the race is not to the swift.” We continue in a chain of “lifetimes” following His lead and trusting Jesus day by day. What peace we can receive by doing just that.

  2. “By adding another spoonful of grace daily, we move onward, one day at a time.” I like that word picture GW. It made me think of Julie Andrews in Mary Poppins singing, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.” I’d much rather have the spoonful of God’s grace then sugar, like the hymn goes “Grace grace God’s grace. Grace that will pardon and cleanse within . . . Marvelous, infinite, matchless grace, Freely bestowed on all who believe! You that are longing to see His face, Will you this moment His grace receive?”

    1. Thank you, Beth! I so agree God’s grace, better than sugary sweet sentiments, keeps us going each day. As a preacher friend used to quote often, “By God’s grace we enter the way, God’s grace sees us through the way, it’s God’s grace all the way!”
Reminds me of Jude’s Doxology, “Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy”
