Foundations

I believe everybody needs a sure foundation to hold on when the earth shakes under their feet, which is a common occurrence in life. We all need a firm foundation. A solid Anchor to hold onto through life’s storms.

The hymn, “How Firm a Foundation” is a Christian classic. It’s a beloved Christian hymn that provides comfort and assurance to believers. Let me share the lyrics with you: (Below the video)

How Firm a Foundation

  1. How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in God’s excellent Word! What more can be said than to you God hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
  2. “Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God, and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
  3. “When through the deep waters I call thee to go, the rivers of sorrow shall not overflow; for I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless, and sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
  4. “When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, my grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.
  5. “The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.”

This hymn beautifully expresses God’s unwavering faithfulness and promises to His people. It reminds us that no matter what challenges we face, God remains our firm foundation. 🙏

“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. !!For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.12If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, 13their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work.”  [1 Corinthians 3:10-13]

May the Living God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, bless you through every and all circumstances. ~G.W

Ephesians 6:23-24:

23 Peace to the brothers and sisters,[a] and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 24 Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ with an undying love.[b]

  1. Ephesians 6:23 The Greek word for brothers and sisters (adelphoi) refers here to believers, both men and women, as part of God’s family.
  2. Ephesians 6:24 Or Grace and immortality to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1. “…When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, my grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply; the flame shall not hurt thee; I only design thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine…”

I love the way this verse speaks of God’s design, and that the fire is not for destruction but for refining, burning away the impurity.

    1. Yes, and I like how each stanza builds to a crescendo and fades at the end. It gives the feeling that the LORD speaks audibly to us for strengthening, then recedes back into heaven.

      Thanks, Pedro.

      God Bless!

  2. GW, you’ve highlighted one of my favorite hymns. I especially love that first stanza. Our foundation is in the Word and the Word is Jesus. It also brings to mind a favorite childhood Sunday School song that retells Jesus’ story about the houses built by the wise man and the foolish man.

    1. Thank you, Beth! This has been a long time favorite of mine also, for the same reason that it keeps us focused on the Bible. I remember way back to when I listened on the radio to J. Vernon McGee’s “Through the Bible” every evening through the week. The opening hymn was always “How Firm a Foundation.” Thank you for the memory!

  3. I’ve been playing -with my flute-from an old conductors copy of “the Messiah” this week (my husband found at Goodwill). The power of words and messages that are powerfully composed and written. Thanks for sharing all the verses. “His righteous omnipotent hand” speaks to me.
