One of my eighteen-year-old granddaughters experienced her first three fender-benders last week on three different days. One going to her college classes, another coming home from work, I don’t know her destination for the third occurrence. I only know what my son told me.
He is very patient with his twin daughters. His concern for their safety is, of course, paramount. However, he slaps his forehead while telling me, and says, “Oh, but the insurance rates for covering the girls. Now this. I can’t wait to break out the gold bullion to pay the next premiums!” Their dad is special in his patience. I think all dads need that God-given extra measure of strength.
His patience reminds me of God’s patience with me when I’m driving under His tutelage. Even more now days, I make sure He’s with me before entering the melee of the public highway of life.
Learning to navigate all kinds of traffic, let alone drive, is a life-long process. The first time behind the wheel is just the beginning. And it gets more dangerous after that.
Just when I feel like I know a thing, I have to remind myself — I now know less than I thought, because there is always so much more to learn. It seems like three steps forward, two back.
That’s God’s way of teaching us humility as we walk before Him, if we will only listen to Him. I’m speaking about life now, for it is all about life, everything we do or don’t do. Learning anything has to do with eternity.

Driving the Road of Life –
God is still giving me driving lessons.
He teaches me to stay in my lane,
Without criticizing those in theirs.
And never, never try to drive,
When He’s got the wheel.
Lord, help me.
Without You, I’m debris
Going someplace to happen while
My pride writes overdraft checks
For mistakes I can’t cover.
I may never get my license here,
But God will never fire me as a learner.
I trust Him.
I tried going it alone far too often.
He lets me keep the scars as a reminder.

Psalm 139:9-10
If I (drive) on the wings of the dawn,
if I (park) on the far side of the sea,
10 even there Your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast.
I was encouraged by this. Yesterday was a very rough day. I shared your post on my Facebook page.

I like your approach, G. W. Stay in my lane and don’t judge others. The poor BMW in the photo will not be cheap to fix!

I thought the same thing when I saw that pic of the BMW in the public forum. Thanks, David!

Our eldest just turned 15 and is counting the months till she can get her learner’s permit. I’m not sure I’m ready for this turn of events maybe in 6 months I’ll feel differently. In the meantime, my husband and I have been verbalizing our driving strategies as she sits in the passenger seat. Your poem made me pause and wonder if I’m also effectively vocalizing to her the driving lessons God’s given me. Especially that one “Never, never try to drive when He’s got the wheel.”

I think your daughter’s interest in learning to drive will strengthen her greatly, making her more attentive to her surroundings in traffic, and paying attention to instruction.

Love the rephrasing of Psalm 139 in driving terminology! I am so happy with my Driver. He helps me watch cross traffic, observe and obey when I need to brake, use my turn signals to communicate my intentions with church and family, and stick to the speed limit so not to get ahead of myself. You are right-driving lessons never end! 🚗

You quoted my favourite Psalm. 139! I’m adopted, although I did find my birth mother 2 years ago. The words of this Psalm touch me deeply. I am not an accident! Thank you for your thoughtful posts.

I’m glad you like Psalm 139. It is one of my favorites also. I’m working on an observational commentary verse by verse. You are so right! You are not an accident! Every life born has a God-given purpose in His plans. Especially those who hear and learn from God as He draws them to Christ Jesus our Lord and Savior. God bless you as you continue.

You are already my favourite blogger!!! Thank you so much for your kind words and your wisdom. Your blog is inspiring indeed. 2nd Corinthians 5:17 is my one of my key verses, as I went through a lot before I came to know Christ as my Saviour. You were so blessed to have a mother who was so devoted to you and JESUS. I’ll keep you in prayer. 🙏🏻

Thank you for your encouragement. Yes, 2 Corinthians 5:17 is a bedrock of encouragement and reminder to us of God’s faithfulness. I refer to it often.
“This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!” NLV
Thank you for your prayers! 🙏🏻

I enjoyed this post very much. One of my granddaughters is learning to drive and it’s a harrowing experience! My middle son has less patience than yours, but I remember so well his driving skills when he was her age so I have to giggle a little ever so quietly!!! May God bless you and yes… Let Jesus take the wheel!!!

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it. So much has changed over the years about driving and learning to drive. Back in the “olden days” I didn’t find anything hard about it. However, I found it very difficult when it came time for me handing the wheel over to the Lord! But thankfully I now find that much easier, too! Thank you for your input here! God bless you!
